Hi. First post but been a viewing for a number of months.
Towards the end of last year I bought an RP6 along with an GS Era Gold with psu1. I wasn't convinced by the Rega Exact, and as I had previously enjoyed a Denon DL110 with a P3, I plumped for a lightly used DL160. A few months on I have come to the conclusion that the Denon isnt for me. It is very spacious and airy but I am after something with a bit more bite and drive. I have read a number of positive rerview s of both the AT 440 mla and 150mlx. However many state that adjustment of the cartridge loading is required for them to sound their best. As this isn't possible with the Era Gold I would welcome thoughts from anyone with experience of either of these with the Era? Also, from reading some previous threads I note the Ortofon 2m Bronze and Black are also highly regarded. If anyone has any experience of these with the era or comparing to the ATs I would be grateful for your views. Thanks in advance, Simon . |

Hi Simon, welcome!
I have the AT150ANV running at the moment (with ATN150MLX stylus) through a Reflex M but have also used it with my Era Gold without any issue. The deck is an RP6 with Audiomods V arm I am also running the 2M Black through the Era Gold. The deck is a Planar 3 with the original RB303/RP6 arm Both cartridges match superbly with the Era Gold so you will have no problem with loading. The 2M Black has a 'fuller' slightly thicker bass whereas the AT150 has equally deep bass, it's just a little tighter and therefore sounds a little leaner overall. Treble on the AT is also fractionally smoother but I find it hard to criticise either cart Edited by Drewan77 - 15 Feb 2015 at 11:46am |

Thanks Drewan. Given that the AT pairs nicely with the era I'm tempted to try the 440mla. It is half the price of the 150mlx and may get me up and running quicker (and without interference from SWMBO!!). It has the micro line stylus so I'm hoping igd won't be an issue.

440MLa has no IGD that I can hear. Please give it 50 hours of setting-in if you find it overly bright: it gets much better after that. IMHO, a cartridge with an excellent price to performance ratio. I have other carts, but the 440 always shines (mine has more than 300 hours on it now).

In the end found a good price on an AT150mlx and fitted it this morning. Still on first record but initial impressions are good. Thanks for the reassurance re at compatability with the Era.
Now, who do I get to change records overnight so it runs in sooner!!!??? |

Hey Simon,
Don, t know if this is too late but I too was not really into the Exact 2 cart on my RP6 and Era Gold. Tried an Ortofon 2M Blue that had been on my Planar 3 but it was not to my liking then or now (i.e. with the RP6). Ended up with a Dynavector 10X5 which is cheaper than the Exact 2 in Canada anyway. I used the Acoustic Signature split ring VTA adjusters at 3mm and settled on 4mm. I find VTF is important and am happy at 1.95g. Sound top to bottom is more involving than the Rega cart, the low end in particular is killer. Output is lower even though it is a high output MC so you need to crank your preamp a bit or as I do on my Bryston power amp increase the input sensitivity. Brian |
