Just to add to my above post - any differences you notice when upsampling/downsampling are likely as not to be your DAC changing filter respective to the sample rate.
CD spec 44.1 produces ringing artifacts that require a steep cutoff filter. Shove the sampling frequency up and you can use less steep filters. |

Hence the reason for oversampling DACs. These do the same job as upsampling but obviously without affecting the file - upsampling is of course done on the fly, on playback as it takes place, if that makes it easier to understand. It uses an extremely similar process of inserting empty samples and to save having to explain it, here's an excerpt from "Principles of Digital Audio" by Ken Pohlmann... Most readers will find the first two paragraphs easy to understand. The Bitzie and Majestic use oversampling (8x on 44.1 and 48k), and Chris's point: "any differences you notice when upsampling/downsampling are likely as not to be your DAC changing filter respective to the sample rate" is valid. |
