i know it's not ideal to connect two lengths of speaker cable together to extend the length, but if one were to do it how best should it be done?

Quick and cheap - twist together and solder, plus insulation tape or heatshrink, or for a temporary job even a chocolate block terminal strip.
Crimp type insulated cable connectors, needs crimp tubes and tools, cheap kits available at Halfords and Maplin as just 2 instances.
For a "Professional" look, in line plug and socket, such as Speakon plug and line socket, again available at Maplin or from a myriad of suppliers on the web
Just listen, if it sounds good to you, enjoy it.

I'd go for soldering using the 'proper' tin/lead stuff... (assuming you have an iron etc)

I thought I had replied, but obviously not!

Thanks to all; it's a plug type solution I'm looking for (should have said) so I'll check out the suggestions.

Maybe too late... I'd go with Ian (BinB) strip and solder with heatshrink colour like the cable. Crimped spades would work or 4mm plugs and line sockets?
